A beer might be just a beer to you, but the kind of beer you typically drink can be as telling about your personality as the clothes you wear, the car you drive, or the political party you support—at least according to major consumer research firms. So what does your brew of choice say about you? Read on and see.

Pale Ale

You might not be enthusiastic about trying new things, but you have a tendency to pick up on trends—whether it’s beer, bands, or fashion—the moment before they hit the “too popular now” backlash. You’re also quick to point out the differences between seemingly similar things, like pale ales and their India-style cousins.

WE RECOMMEND: Pale 31 from Firestone Walker Brewing; Sparks from Mikkeller Brewing; .394 from Alesmith Brewing

Sparks Pale Ale -- Mikkeller Brewing

IPA

You love hops to an almost disturbing degree, always seeking out the hoppiest India Pale Ale around. While you can get a little pretentious about loving IPAs before everyone else, mostly you’re just extremely passionate about the things you like. Not that it’s a long list—you value consistency and stability, only experimenting within tight, comfortable limits.

WE RECOMMEND: Booming Rollers from Modern Times Beer; 51/50 from Ironfire Brewing; Breaking Bud from Knee Deep Brewing; Duet from Alpine Beer

Double/Triple IPA

See above; multiply by factor of 2 or 3.

WE RECOMMEND: Pliny the Elder from Russian River Brewing; Hoptologist from Knee Deep Brewing; Stingray from Coronado Brewing; Hop Juice from Left Coast Brewing; "Enjoy By" series from Stone Brewing; Heady Topper from The Alchemist; Hammerland from El Segundo

Hop Juice Triple IPA -- Left Coast Brewing

Pilsner

You’re not interested in fancy flavors or extreme tastes in beers, food, or any other basic necessities. All you need is a decent beer with a classic taste. You’re not one to savor anything or buy things for any reason other than their stated purpose. In other words, you drink beer to get buzzed, eat food to get full, and wear clothes because weather and local laws don’t give you much of a choice.

WE RECOMMEND: Scrimshaw from North Coast Brewing; Who You Callin' Wussie? from Stone Brewing; Pivo Pils from Firestone Walker Brewing

Who You Callin' Wussie Pilsner -- Stone Brewing Company

Lager

You honor craftsmanship in all forms—beer, furniture, mechanics, etc.—and try to get others to appreciate good old-fashioned hard work as well. The simple pleasures of life are all you need to be happy, and you tend to veer off into conversations about the good old days, which were the best “good old days” ever, even if you’re not old enough to have been there to enjoy them.

WE RECOMMEND: Longboard Lager from Kona; California Lager from Anchor Brewing

Stout

Creative and adventurous, you crave flavor and complexity in your beer and life in general. You’re also health-conscious without being loud about it (preferring the health benefits of stout over light beer any day), and you often mull over food and beverage flavors like a wine connoisseur. Of course, all this mulling and pondering means you have little time for carousing and barhopping—leave that to the light beer lovers.

WE RECOMMEND: W00t Stout from Stone Brewing; High-Westified from Lagunitas Brewing; Black House from Modern Times Beer; Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout; KBS from Founders Brewing; The Butcher from Societe Brewing

Nitro Black House Stout -- Modern Times Beer

Sour

Another fan of adventure and experimentation, you’ve been around the block enough to know what you like and what you don’t, but your restlessness means you can become bored quickly. You’re also a tad insecure (which explains all the adventure and experimentation—you’re constantly trying to find yourself), but self-aware enough to not let it annoy your friends.

WE RECOMMEND: The Beatitude series from Council Brewing; Naughty by Nectar from Alvarado Street/Track 7

Wheat

You’re laid back and down to earth, but your breezy nature means you find traditional office jobs to be downright suffocating. You probably own a hammock (or wish you did), and when friends introduce you to new people, they usually request one of your many great stories, which often leave everyone either wide-eyed or in stitches (or both).

WE RECOMMEND: Fortunate Islands from Modern Times Beer; Mana Wheat from Maui Brewing

Mexican Lager

If a crisp Mexican brew with a squeeze of lime is your personal paradise, it means you’re energetic, extroverted, and always looking for the party. But that doesn’t mean you’re some stereotypical party animal—you genuinely love people and want to hang out with them as much as possible. That’s why you’re not too concerned about career ambition—as long as you have weekends off, you’re happy.

WE RECOMMEND: Negra Modelo; Dos Equis Amber
